Making Rafter Tails Can Be Tedious Unless...

When it comes to roofing model railroad structures, this is an area you must get right. For most layouts, rooftops are the most commanding feature of the structures you spend so much time perfecting.

But the roof stands out and yes, rafters do show up so they are well worth your time. I can't tell you how many times I skipped this addition and I don't consider i my best effort.

I’ve had a rough time generating rafters so roof edges look realistic until Pat Meeuwissen shared this tip with me. I had been aware many modelers use rafter tails for this purpose, but the looked pretty time consuming.

Here’s Pat’s version:

Making Rafter Tails The Easy Way

I want to show you a tip I started using just because I was dumb and added the support structure to the bottom. It has made it ten times harder to work on the details for the rest of the building. The learning process is getting better and here's my way of working with safer hands off technique. The inset photo shows the tweezers that help speed this project."

I start with a one by 12 piece of stripwood stain it and the glue precut pieces seen in the background to the strip and use a piece of cardboard as a gauge in between the pieces to keep them even.

Here is the result:
