Workshop Organization
Generates More Modeling Time

I've seen it happen in my own life four times now scale modeling can result in a tsunami of supplies and equipment. Whether you work on your favorite projects in a corner of the kitchen or have the luxury of a dedicated workshop, you'll find getting organized up front makes the job easier.

My wife gave me a hand this time around and despite the fact I am utilizing a space of about 10' by 6' for both my computerized office and my hobby bench, I have a real sense of workshop organization.

My Organizational Helper

The trick is to develop individual storage containers for parts to specific models and another for tools and shelves for the working models.

This keeps your workspace focused on the project you are working on instead of the "one space fits all" concept.

Workshop organization needed But how do you get there if the tsunami has already rolled in?

Revamp your thinking and then do it.

Here is a five-point organize or reorganize plan for your workspace whether you have a dedicated space for modeling or you "borrow" the space you need.

The critical ingredient is getting off your butt and doing something. It's as simple as that. A lot of people have ideas, but there are few who decide to do something about them now. Not tomorrow. Not next week. But today. Don't put this off!

1. Get Motivated.  Attitude is everything. If you say, "I can't," then there's a good chance you won't. However, if you say "I can," there's an excellent chance you will.

Take a few moments to think about how wonderful it's going to be when you get that tool crib organized, or when you clear that desk or table you call your "work space" out that has been sitting there for the past year.

Think about how you will use all the extra time you're going to gain, simply by getting organized.

2. Set Goals  Make a list of all the things you want to organize, whether those items are your shop, your desk, or your time. When you're done with your list, choose ONE item on it. That is going to be your MAJOR GOAL.

Now, take that major goal, and break it down into smaller, bite-sized pieces. Those will be your MINI-GOALS. One by one, you're now going to achieve each of your mini-goals, until each one is completed. Once the final one is completed, you will have accomplished your major goal. Here's an example:

  •     MAJOR GOAL: Organize the my shop.

  •     MINI-GOAL 1: Organize tool crib.

  •     MINI-GOAL 2: Organize under bench area for tools and/or large items.

  •     MINI-GOAL 3: Weed out your magazine collection.

  •     MINI-GOAL 4: Set up separate storage areas for each modeling project.

 3. Establish Deadlines  "I'll get to it, when I have time," never works. You're not going to have time, unless you schedule time.

You should set a specific deadline for each of your mini-goals. Here's an example:

  •     DEADLINE FOR MINI-GOAL 1: A week from today.

  •     DEADLINE FOR MINI-GOAL 2: Set this for one week later

  •     DEADLINE FOR MINI-GOAL 3: 2-3 days ought to take care of the magazines

  •     DEADLINE FOR MINI-GOAL 4: Use three to five days each.

 4.  Designate rewards  In order to really get motivated, designate a reward for each mini-goal achieved by your specified deadline. It has to be something really enticing, that you will only give yourself WHEN you reach your goal. Time to model or maybe a visit to a friend's hobby shop.

Your final mini-goal--the one that allows you to fully complete your major goal--should be the reward that most entices you. Here's an example: Buy that new model, or visit a hobby seminar/workshop.

5.Apply Effective Systems

It is time to stop saying “I wish this shop was a little more organized.” Activate it instead.

By turning a wish into a dream... a dream into a goal... a goal into a plan... THEN taking some action (however small) to move towards your dream, you EARN the right to EXPECT rather than just wish and wait.

Expect Success... rather than just wish and wait.
