My Cannon Project

I was given an old CVA "Old Ironsides" cannon kit to build for a friend of my wife. It was old and incomplete and had some rust on it. It is a black powder firing cannon based upon the 24 pound Navy guns aboard the USS Constitution used in the war of 1812.

The kit was built making new wheels and doing the black-bluing of all the metal, but the base was entirely scratch built using available wood, paint, oil and re-milling popsicle sticks to be used as deck planks.

The gun port shutters open and close, and use R/C aircraft hinges and they are held open with embedded magnets in the Bulwarks and steel washers embedded in the doors.

It actually fires and all ropes and rigging are functional, if not scaled accurately due to life-sized humans operating it, but it works the same as the real thing.

It works out to be about 1/18 scale. Just now finished and test fired. Needs minor adjustments.
