You Can Prevent A Scale Modeling Tragedy

This is a plea that came through from the Carrier Builders Community forum to save a truly magnificent model of the USS Enterprise that has taken 20 years to complete.

Save this magnificent model

It can’t be expressed any better than in the words of  the modeler,
Gabriel Suranyi in Dallas, TX.

The New SMH Modeler’s Mall

If you’ve ever looked at the intricate rigging done by scale modelers on a period ship and said I haven’t got the patience or a scratch built 3-story brownstone in an n-scale layout and said I haven’t got the imagination, or maybe a paint job that includes long, straight lines you put off because you’re too nervous…

This is a site just for you.

If you are retired, or thinking about retiring, we have hobbies here that combine recreation, instruction and constructive ability.  You will also find projects here if you are a teenage racing buff or an adult who wants to re-create his favorite car in miniature.

From a 1:5000 scale model of the entire city of Singapore, China or a 1/2-inch=1 foot dollhouse, the world has relied on scale models for 5,000-plus years to fill a variety of needs:

  • in engineering for testing the likely performance of a design object at an early   stage without the expense of building a full-sized prototype.

  • in architecture for showing the look of a new construction before it is built, this is called architectural model

  • on TV and in the movie industry for constructing objects or sets that cannot be built in full size

  • in promotion of new products such as heavy equipment and automobiles and other vehicles

  • as die-cast models of vehicles for use as collectibles

  • as injection molded kits to be assembled by the modeler

  • in model railroading

  • in scratch building wooden scale models of period war ships

  • in war gaming and fantasy collectibles as model ships and ships in bottles

  • for building Radio Control models to make your models airborne, seaward or racing on land at your command

Over the past 50 years, I’ve been in and out of the hobby as a scale modeler three times and I am now working on my fourth. The one thing I have learned is patience is key and I am best working at one of two speeds, slow and slower.

Incidentally, the 5,000 year old scale model mentioned above (not one of mine) duplicated a Pharaoh’s sea-going vessel in the year –2561BC. It is still on display today. Talk about materials durability.
